The playground was designed to trace the location of the original roundhouse serving the Southern Pacific railroad.
Tracks still cross 16th Street where UCSF's new Children's Hospital is located. They once were amidst dozens of tracks, and went into the Southern Pacific Roundhouse (which allowed trains to be switched from one track to another) that occupied the land just west of the new hospital.
