Woods Yard Cable Car Barn
Where the city goes when it needs a new cable car!
Propelled mechanically by a system of cables threaded beneath the city streets -- picture a ski lift that runs upside down, and you get the basic idea -- the cable car lines were installed in the late 1800s, and they continue to operate in San Francisco to this day.

But where does the city go when it needs a new cable car? No factories make the things anymore, obviously, so the San Francisco Municipal Railway has a team of ace carpenters who build new ones from scratch at the Woods Division maintenance yard in Dogpatch.
Take a peek inside the windows of the facility behind the playground along 22nd and you'll see their creation in action and you may come home with some photos of a brand new cable car under construction.
